Hanging heavy art on a wall?
What is the best way to hang a very heavy 4′ wide x 8′ tall x 1/2″ inch deep piece of wooden art on a wall so that it is secure? Challenge. . . This piece of art is a 20 piece puzzle. Option 1 – We can secure the completed puzzle to a wood backing of the same size. Hence the question, how to hang heavy art?Option 2 – To make the weight easier to manage, we can hang each puzzle piece individually. However, the challenge is how to hang each individual piece so that the puzzle fits together? We’re open to both ways, but looking for ideas on how to execute on either.

Depending on the weight of the individual pieces, you might consider drywall mollies. You can pick them up at any hardware store.
If you’re going to hang the entire puzzle, I’d recommend a studfinder and a level. Secure the piece directly to the studs beneath the drywall.
wood backing…be sure to find studs and use #12 or #14 wood screws…2 should be sufficient spaced 1/3 (approx) of the way in from either side…use wire on the back of the piece and place it over the exposed screw heads. done.
If you can find a stud its best to use it. Also there are new drywall hangers available that can hold in excess of 20 pounds. I have these in my home & they work great. Home Depot or Lowes carry them.
There are extruded metal hangers that are shaped like interlocking hands. (think one “U” fitting inside another). These can be purchased or ordered at larger framing stores. Uncertain what kind of wall you have: drywall or lath so the fasteners that attach the wall side “U” will vary. Locate studs, use a laser level, Recommend you use gorilla glue plus fasteners to attach the puzzle side “U”. Have fun!
Take a 2×4 as long as the width of the art. Rip it lengthwise at a 45 degree angle. Secure one part horizontally on the wall at the studs with long wood screws, with the 45 degree angle pointing up and out. Secure the second piece to the art with wood screws, with the 45 degree angle pointing out and down. This creates a hook, I think it is called a French Hook. Very strong and it distributes the weight.
